OFI Support and Accomplishments


Wildlife Research

  • Began supporting the Orangutan Research and Conservation Program by purchasing inflatable boat and motor and providing much needed supply boat repair-1988
  • Supports the ORCP in its wild orangutan and rain forest research -1989 to present
  • Supported wildlife research efforts in Sumatra and Sarawak-1992-1993
  • Administers the Lorraine P. Jenkins Fellowship for Orangutan and Rainforest Research: Funding orangutan research in West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, & Sarawak- 1998-present
  • Administered the Sarawak Orangutan Fellowship Award in association with the Government of Sarawak - 1999
  • Validated the use of infrared technology to locate orangutans- 2002

Conservation

  • Evicted illegal loggers from the northern part of Tanjung Puting National Park as part of OFI's Community-based Patrol program - 2000
  • Supported the ORCP in providing orangutan care, rehabilitation and repatriation-1989-present
  • Supported the repatriation and care of six very ill infant orangutans who were interdicted in Bangkok as part of a worldwide smuggling operation ("Bangkok Six"). President Galdikas personally helped provide care and arranged for their repatriation-1990
  • Supported the repatriation and care of ten juvenile orangutans from Taipei to Indonesia ("Taiwan Ten")-1990
  • Supported the incorporation of the Orangutan Foundation in Taiwan to help end the trade in orangutans, educate owners who do own orangutans, repatriate those orangutans who can return to the forests of Malaysia and Indonesia, provide a sanctuary for those orangutans who cannot return-1990
  • Formed the Medical Care Committee, a group of veterinarians and physicians with expertise or strong interest in orangutan medical management issues to provide recommendations to the Foundation-1991
  • Supported the care of the "Taiwan Ten" while in Jakarta-1991
  • Began funding the planting of thousands of trees in degraded land surrounding Tanjung Puting National Park-1993
  • Committed to establishing a sanctuary for orangutans in North America-1993
  • Supported Fire Rescue and Relief in and around Tanjung Puting National Park-1997/1998
  • Constructed an enhanced Orangutan Care & Quarantine Center in Central Kalimantan-1998
  • Promoted the conversion of former logging concessions into the Lamandau Nature Reserve in Central Kalimantan-1998
  • Established co-management partnership with the Indonesian Wildlife authorities in Central Kalimantan that includes Tanjung Puting National Park and the Orangutan Care & Quarantine Center-1999

Education

  • Began publishing Pongo Quest, a biannual newsletter of the Orangutan Foundation International for the purpose of communicating information regarding orangutans to OFI supporters and those interested in the orangutan and the rain forest-1988
  • Supported the development of a basic curriculum package and program delivery to primary and secondary schools in the LA area and a penpal program-1989
  • Supported the development, publication and distribution of educational material for Indonesian children (coloring book) and Indonesian high school children (writing book with facts about orangutans and rain forests)-1989
  • Supported the development and operation of the Orangutan Foundation in Indonesia & Taiwan to help raise awareness and appreciation in those countries regarding the important role of the orangutan and it rain forest habitat-1990
  • Co-sponsored, with the Indonesian government, the International Great Apes Conference which for the first time in 17 years brought great ape field researchers together to discuss conservation issues impacting great ape populations-1991
  • Encouraged the creation of chapters in several countries (Australia, Canada and England) for the primary purpose of educating the citizens about orangutans and their rain forest habitat and for assisting OFI in its fund raising efforts. Activities of these chapters coordinated by OFI-1991-1992
  • Created the OFI Student Gazette newsletter, as a supplement to Pongo Quest, and organized student group-1991
  • Co-sponsored the International Conference on Orangutans-the Neglected Ape, CSU Fullerton, with 300 in attendance-1994
  • Produced an education curriculum package for primary and secondary students-1994
  • Produced a "Guidebook to Tanjung Puting National Park" under a US government grant-1994
  • Initiated the OFI Study Tours to Tanjung Puting National Park to educate tourists while supporting the ORCP-1994
  • Significantly increased awareness regarding the orangutan and its plight during Prof. Galdikas' book tour across the United States and England- 1995
  • Inititated an Annual International Orangutan Awareness Week (first week of November) to enhance appreciation about the orangutan. International chapters and local coordinators across the country engaged thousands of people in events such as contests, lectures, fund-raisers, and displays- 1996
  • Established a website to provide relevant information on orangutans and OFI to the public on the internet- 1996
  • Organized and Co-sponsored the Third International Great Apes of the World Conference in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia-July 3-6, 1998
  • Produced the academic, peer-reviewed volume All Apes Great and Small vol I: African Apes- 2001
